Sources of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) By Dr. Sammy Lau

The question of whether STIs can be transmitted through hotel towels, public toilet seats, or shared hot springs may already be a concern for many people. Generally, STIs are transmitted through sexual activity or contact. Dr. Sammy Lau, a dermatologist and specialist in STIs, points out that it is not easy to contract an STI from shared objects unless there is brief contact with an infected individual. Therefore, it is unlikely for towels, toilet seats, or hot springs to transmit STIs.

Sources of STI transmission

Contrary to what is commonly believed, STIs are not typically transmitted through shared facilities or objects such as hotel towels, public toilet seats, or shared hot springs. Viruses responsible for STIs have difficulty surviving in the air. Unless there is very brief contact with a previous user who has a high viral load, it is unlikely for STIs to be transmitted through shared facilities or objects.

The primary sources of STI transmission or infection are intimate skin-to-skin contact or contact with mucous membranes. Therefore, sexual activity is the most common source of STI transmission.

How to prevent STI infection

Dr. Sammy Lau emphasizes that by avoiding unsafe sexual practices, the chances of contracting STIs can be significantly reduced. The use of condoms or barrier methods does not guarantee 100% prevention of STI transmission because condoms have limitations in terms of coverage and cannot fully protect all areas of the skin. Consequently, some individuals may unfortunately still contract STIs despite using condoms or barrier methods.

Treatment for STIs

Different STIs require different treatment methods. In general, STI specialists employ the following methods to treat or alleviate STIs, depending on the type of infection:

Topical medications

Oral medications

Injections

Surgical procedures

Cryotherapy

Laser therapy

Like any other illness, delaying or neglecting the treatment of STIs can worsen the condition and lead to complications.
