Understanding Eczema in Summer

Dermatologists explain that approximately one in five Hong Kong residents experience eczema at some point in the year. This condition can manifest in various forms, including atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and seborrheic eczema, among others.  Symptoms can range from itching and dryness to rashes, scaly patches, blisters, and even skin infections.  While the winter’s dry air can exacerbate eczema for some, summer’s heat, sweating, outdoor allergens, and increased sun exposure can trigger flare-ups in others.

Sweat: A Common Eczema Trigger

During summer’s hot weather, the body naturally produces more sweat, particularly in areas prone to perspiration, such as the armpits, inner elbows, thighs, feet, and neck. This sweat can irritate the skin, leading to inflammation and eczema outbreaks.

Expert Tips for Eczema Management in Summer

Dermatologists recommend the following strategies for managing eczema during the summer months (from June to September):

1. Stay Cool with Breathable Fabrics:

  • Opt for loose-fitting clothing made of cool, breathable fabrics to minimize skin irritation and prevent overheating.

2. Minimize Excessive Sweating:

  • After exercise or sweating, dry your skin thoroughly and change into dry clothes to avoid prolonged contact with moisture.

3. Maintain Skin Hydration:

  • Apply moisturizers after showering or bathing to keep your skin hydrated. Choose fragrance-free or hypoallergenic moisturizers, and avoid products containing alcohol, which can further dry out the skin.  Additionally, also apply a layer of moisturizer before bed to prevent nighttime itching.
