Dermatologists Consider 100 Strands of Hair Loss Per Day normal

The presence of fallen hair on the floor often raises questions like ‘what constitutes abnormal hair loss?’ or ‘when it is appropriate to seek medical advice?’

The hair growth cycle

To address these concerns, it is essential to understand the hair growth cycle.  Hair goes through distinct phases in each individual.   The first is the growth phase, during which approximately 85% to 90% of hair follicles are engaged in continuous hair growth.  This is followed by the regression phase, in which approximately 1% of hair follicles undergo shrinkage. Finally, the resting phase occurs, during which approximately 1.5% of an individual’s hair ceases to grow.

Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss is a natural part of the hair growth cycle. As hair follicles transition from the resting phase to the growth phase, old hair is shed, making way for the emergence of new hair. It is estimated that around 1% of follicles convert to the growth phase daily, resulting in an average daily hair loss of approximately 100 strands, which is considered normal.

When should you seek medical treatment for hair loss?

Losing more than 100 strands per day does not immediately warrant concern. Increased hair loss can be attributed to various factors, and medical professionals evaluate each case individually. Stress-induced hair loss is a common cause, which can be triggered by factors such as pregnancy, serious illness, COVID-19, surgery, or the use of specific medications. Maintaining a calm mindset can help mitigate hair loss associated with stress.

Alopecia Areata (Ghost Shaving)

In more severe cases of hair loss, such as alopecia areata, commonly referred to as ghost shaving, the immune system targets and shrinks hair follicles, resulting in the cessation of hair growth. This condition may present as patchy hair loss and progress rapidly. If left untreated, it can affect the entire scalp and, in some instances, lead to the loss of eyebrows and eyelashes.

Treatment Options

Fortunately, effective treatment options are available. These include the use of topical corticosteroid creams or solutions and corticosteroid injections into affected areas. Therefore, individuals concerned about hair loss issues are advised to seek medical advice.
