Are your nails thickened, discoloured, or brittle? You may be experiencing a fungal nail infection
Fungal nail disease, otherwise known medically as onychomycosis, is a common fungal infection affecting nail appearance and structure. It can spread through shared towels, slippers, or direct contact. Early symptoms are often subtle and mistaken for normal nail variations, potentially delaying treatment. While effective clinical solutions are available, prompt consultation is also advised

Recognising Symptoms:
.Nail thickening (one or more nails)
.Discolouration (typically white/yellow-brown, occasionally green/purple/black)
.Brittle, ragged, or distorted appearance
.Debris accumulation under the nail plate
Primary Causes & Risk Factors
![]()
Fungal nail infections occur when dermatophytes, yeasts, or moulds invade the nail. Toenails are more frequently affected than fingernails, and it is not unusual to see multiple infections at a time or to have the infection coupled with Athlete’s Foot.
Diagnosis & Treatment Options

A dermatologist will conduct a clinical examination for this type of condition, and he/she may additionally perform a mycological test (microscopic analysis or culture of nail clippings) for confirmation.
Clinically validated treatment options include:
In the event that an infection is confirmed, oral antifungal medications are typically prescribed, as they are regarded as the most effective treatment for both children and adults. However, under certain circumstances, oral treatment may be supplemented with additional topical therapies, laser treatments, or debridement.
.Topical Antifungal Medications: Typically used in conjunction with oral medication to enhance penetration, effectively enabling the medication to reach targeted tissues with greater efficacy.
.Laser Therapy: Targets fungal pathogens using specific lasers (e.g., Nd:YAG or CO₂ lasers), inducing thermolysis.
.Advantages: Localised effect, minimal impact on surrounding tissue, avoids systemic medication contraindications.
.Ideal for: Patients unsuitable for systemic therapy or as combination treatment augmentation.
.Clinical Debridement: Performed by certified clinician to reduce nail thickness or remove infected material to enhance topical agent penetration.
Essential Prevention & Foot Care
Since fungi thrive in warm, damp environments, patients should:
.Wearing well-ventilated footwear
.Selecting moisture-wicking socks (cotton or technical fabrics)
.Maintaining foot hygiene and thorough drying
.Keeping nails trimmed short and straight across
.Avoiding shared personal footcare items
Early Intervention is Key
If you are struggling with fungal nails, it is recommended to seek help from a dermatologist as soon as possible.
Early diagnosis and treatment are key to restoring healthy, beautiful nails.
