Treatment Overview
Laser hair removal is quick. For example, a treatment session of the
underarms only takes about three minutes. Most patients will require four to
six treatments (sometimes more) for maximum clearance at a
given area. Treatments are usually performed 6 - 12 weeks apart.
Many factors determine the effectiveness of laser hair removal:
• The area being treated
• Hair colour
• Hair thickness
• Skin colour
• Ethnic and genetic background
• Hormonal status
• Weight (obesity can increase hair growth)
• Medications
The most realistic description of the results after laser
treatment is: "long-term hair reduction". The amount of hair
will be substantially reduced after four to six treatments, generally
by 70-90 percent, and the remaining hair is much finer and lighter
in colour. Most people are very pleased with this degree of
improvement, as it is the coarse, dark hair which is unsightly
and causes problems like ingrown hairs. Once a satisfactory level
of hair removal has been achieved, the results can persist
for years. For some people, touch-up treatments may be required
later on.
To prepare yourself for the treatment, it is important that
you should not tan the treatment area. Avoid waxing or
plucking of hair at that area for at least four weeks; shave, clip
or use depilatory cream instead if required. Let some hair grow
out prior to laser treatment or consultation so that your
dermatologist can assess that extent and nature of hair growth.

Hair Removal - A Long-Term Solution for Unwanted Hair
Tired of repeatedly waxing, shaving and plucking? Weary of
stubbles and ingrown hair? Maybe you should consider laser hair removal.
Laser works by targeting the black or brown pigment in hair
bulbs. Upon absorption, the laser energy is transformed into
heat, which disables and destroys the hair follicles.
Basically, anywhere with dark, unwanted hair can be treated with
laser, the more popular areas being:
• Underarms
• Bikini area
• Arms or legs
• Back and chest
• Upper lip
• Beard area (for preventing pseudofolliculitis barbae or "razor
bumps")
