Ultherapy (High-intensity focused ultrasound / HIFU)
Over time, our faces inevitably lose the firmness that we associate with youth. Ultherapy (the name given to the treatment using the Ulthera device) is a new skin tightening treatment, which effectively firms and lifts the contours of the face, while refining the skin.
How does Ulthera tighten the skin?
Ultherapy is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure. It tightens skin and tissue in a single treatment session by stimulating the production of collagen at strategic depths inside the skin. Collagen is vital for tissue firmness and elasticity.
The Ulthera device delivers ultrasound energy that is focused deep under the skin, to form discrete thermal coagulative points. These micro 'hot-spots' are created in strategically important tissue planes - as deep as 4.5 mm under the surface of the skin - which kickstart the body's own rejuvenative mechanisms. Production of healthy collagen is increased, leading to effective skin tightening and rejuvenation of the facial contours.
Who should use Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is effective in reversing mild to moderate age-related skin laxity, restoring the face, to give a more refreshed and youthful appearance.
Ultherapy lifts and firms the cheeks. The jawline is rejuvenated, while marionette lines (furrows that run from the corners of the mouth) and nasolabial folds (furrows that run from the sides the nose) are reduced. By firming up the skin and tissue on the forehead, Ultherapy lifts the brows and opens up the eyes, reducing the 'tired look' caused by the passage of time.
Ultherapy also improves the quality of the skin itself, leaving it more refined and luminous.
What is an Ultherapy treatment session like?
Ultherapy is a single-session treatment that lasts for about 45 minutes for the face.
Some discomfort (a little like pin-pricks) will be experienced by most people when focused ultrasound energy is delivered into the skin. The degree of discomfort varies from person to person. To get maximum improvement from the treatment, we recommend some form of medication to make it more comfortable, so the treatment energy will not need to be reduced. Your doctor can discuss with you the choice of medication available.
What can I expect afterwards?
There is no 'down-time' with Ultherapy, meaning you can return to your normal activities right away. Your skin may appear a little flushed immediately afterwards, but any redness should disappear within a few hours. It is not uncommon to experience slight swelling for a few days following the procedure. On bony areas, there may be some mild tingling or tenderness to the touch, for a few days to weeks, but these are mild and temporary in nature. Rarely, small areas of bruising or nerve impairment may occur temporarily.
What kind of results can I expect?
With just one treatment, the regenerative process is initiated, but the full effect will build gradually over the course of two to nine months as collagen production continues.
Although Ultherapy cannot produce the dramatic improvement, which is only achievable with surgery, our experience at Skincentral - with over 200 treatments performed - shows it reliably produces a pleasing improvement, and is the most effective, non-invasive skin tightening treatment we have found so far.
