By acting selectively on the muscles that cause wrinkles, it is a quick, simple and effective solution to reduce frown lines, crow's feet and forehead lines. However, Botox can only diminish wrinkles that are caused by muscle action. In other words, wrinkles which appear when you smile or frown. In general, lines present at rest will not be improved with Botox. Early wrinkle treatment with Botox may help to prevent the formation of some of these "permanent" resting lines. It can also raise the brows, soften lines around the neck and lips, and raise the corners of the mouth. It can also be used to reduce perspiration of the armpits, hands and feet.

The procedure:

Botox is injected into target muscles using a very fine needle. The procedure takes about 5-10 minutes depending on the number of areas to be treated. No anesthetic is required, but in certain cases an ice pad may use before injecting. Discomfort is minimal and brief, with most patients likening the sensation to that of a bug bite.

After the session:

Very mild redness and swelling will occur at the injection sites for up to a few hours. This is usually unnoticeable and can be concealed with makeup should you require it.

Cautions:

In some cases mild bruising may occur around the injection site for a few days but this can be covered up with makeup. A temporary headache or "heaviness" is not uncommon after injections in the forehead area, especially after the first treatment. In rare instances, patients may develop a temporary weakness of neighboring muscles, resulting in droopy brows or eyelids. Where present, all of these side effects are likely to be mild and temporary, and in most cases, do not significantly limit routine activities. Botox treatments are not recommended for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or for patients suffering from neuromuscular diseases.

Treatment plan:

The results of wrinkle treatment can be seen within days and usually last for three to four months for wrinkle reduction. Repeated treatments may produce longer-lasting results. If you do not wish to continue having Botox® treatments, the lines will just gradually come back once the effects have worn off. You can restart having a Botox treatment anytime you like. When used to help reduce perspiration, the effect may last for more than 8 months.
