What to do after Sunburn

Unfortunately, where sunburn is concerned, there are no quick fixes. The sun's rays have already done their damage and it can take anywhere from 12 to 24 hours for the full-extent and severity of the burn to become apparent. While you can't undo the damage, you can help to ease redness and discomfort by following these steps:

  1. Keep the affected area cool - try a cold compress or take a cool bath. But do not scrub the skin - pat-dry with a towel and do not shave the affected area
  2. Apply moisturizer – frequent application of moisturizer, especially those that are aloe based, can relieve pain
  3. Take an analgesic – if you are in a lot of discomfort take a simple analgesic such as aspirin or ibuprofen (children should not take aspirin)
  4. Drink - make sure you drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration
  5. Leave blisters intact – should blisters occur which indicate a more severe burn they should be left alone.
  6. Do not pick at the skin – After a few days skin will start to peel off; it should be left to come off naturally, do not pick it off.
  7. Sunburn can be life-threatening – Call your doctor if you have severe pain/blistering, fever, headache, nausea/vomiting, confusion or fainting
